Rosalind Austin

Parent/Guardian of the Year Award

A St Columb resident, dubbed ‘the epitome of selflessness’ has been named ‘Parent of the Year’ at Pirate FM’s Local Heroes Awards in association with South West Bottled Gas.

84-year-old Rosalind Austin was nominated by her daughter, Linda for her continuous support, love and making a difference to those around her. Rosalind not only cares for her 40-year-old son who has downs syndrome, but also provides support for her joint tenant who also requires continuous support.

Linda said: “Four years ago, she saw me go through Breast Cancer. She was my rock as I was also going through a very acrimonious divorce.

“I wish everyone had a mother like my brother, sister and I have. The whole world would be a better place”.

Linda continues: “She is nothing short of a miracle. She's had both hips replaced and is waiting for a full knee replacement next month. She still drives, and looks in on her elderly friends Irene and Edith.

“Three years ago when her last surviving sister was in a care home she made sure that every resident received a Christmas present to open on Christmas morning. She is the epitome of selflessness”.

This award was sponsored by Camel Creek Adventure Park, and Rosalind collected the honour at a special ceremony at Tregenna Castle Resort in St Ives.

She has also worked closely with Volunteer Cornwall to raise awareness of mental health, physical and learning disabilities.
