Terry Smith

Emergency Services Award

A popular Bodmin firefighter has been honoured with the ‘Emergency Services’ award at Pirate FM’s Local Heroes Awards in association with South West Bottled Gas.

Terry Smith was nominated for this award after 35 years of dedication to serving his local community over 35 years as a retained firefighter. Son Kye nominated him for the award, and said: “He was on call 24/7 for 35 years always attending shouts, even on days like Christmas and birthdays.”

“On one occasion, one of our neighbour’s house caught fire. He noticed the smoke and instantly stopped what he was doing and got all the family and animals out as soon as he could.

“When the fire was out, the family had to stay with friends and had nowhere for their animals. So my dad decided to help them even more and looked after their parrot and reptiles.

Kye added: “My dad would do anything to help others”.

On another occasion, Terry helped save a lady from her burning home after hearing a fire alarm go off.

Terry said: “If I hadn’t of heard it, I have no idea whether she would have made her way out”.

This award, sponsored by Specsavers Bodmin was collected by Terry at the ceremony which took place at Tregenna Castle Resort in St Ives.

Kye said: “He loved every minute of his 35 years of services and did everything he could to help others, even if it meant putting his own life at risk to do so”

Terry said: “I’m very proud of Kye, and to put me forward for this award makes me feel good to think my son is proud enough to deserve it. It is very emotional”.
